
After graduating as the Best Outgoing Student (MBBS) from AIIMS, Dr. R. Dawar went to the University of Maryland Medical College and Hospital and the Kansas University Medical Centre, USA for her Residency and Chief Residency in Pathology. Having obtained her certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology (DAB-Path), she returned to Delhi and joined as faculty in the Department of Pathology at AIIMS in 1977 where she worked till November 2005 (29 years). She then took premature retirement to join the Dharamshila Hospital and Research Centre (DHRC) as Director (Academics) and Head of the Department of Pathology and Transfusion Medicine. She is one of the nine promoters involved in the planning, building and management of this hospital since 1990 and has been a member of the Governing body since 1994, when the hospital was commissioned, to the present. She was member of the Hospital Management Committee since its inception. During her stay here, she has planned and established the new Pathology Laboratories and the new Blood Bank. She has been the coordinator for applying and obtaining accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) for the hospital, making DHRC the first NABH accredited Cancer Hospital of India. Dharamshila Hospital And Research Centre has been reassessed and accredited by NABH for the period 2008-2020. Under her guidance the Laboratories have been reassessed and accredited by NABL for the period 2008-2018.
During her stay at AIIMS she has guided and co-guided the theses of numerous MD, DM and Ph. D students, published over 100 papers in national and international journals and has extensive experience (more than 30 years) in cytology, histopathology and oncopathology especially lymphoreticular and gynecological malignancies, breast cancer and oral cancer. She has done special studies on the placenta and its changes in high risk pregnancies and intrauterine growth retardation. During her stay at AIIMS she has looked after national and international research projects in these areas and held charge of many sections in the Department of Pathology especially the surgical pathology laboratory. She set up the Central Immunohistochemistry Laboratory in the Department of Pathology at AIIMS.
She is a trained lead auditor and technical auditor for the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and has audited numerous clinical laboratories in Delhi and around the country for accreditation with NABL. She is a member of the Accreditation Committee of NABL for many years.
She has been Secretary cum Treasurer of the Indian Association of Pathologist and Microbiologist, Delhi Chapter and organized numerous CMEs, National slide seminars and Conferences (International and National). She has been an active participant of Delhi Tumour Group and Delhi Breast Cancer Group. She is a Fellow of the Indian College of Pathology (FICP).
She has been an examiner (MBBS and MD) for Delhi University and other colleges around the country. She has contributed in more than 100 publications in National and International Journals.
